The Saratoga County Rural Preservation Company was formed and incorporated under a grant from the New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal in January 1983. The Rural Preservation Program was established by Article XVII of the Private Housing Finance Law of New York State. The Rural Preservations company’s original mandate was to preserve and maintain housing stock, develop affordable housing and mandate housing programs. This has been expanded in recent years to include a transitional shelter for homeless veterans, permanent housing for veterans and their families, rental assistance programs, and mortgage assistance for affordable home ownership.
Rural Preservation Company services include ongoing management of federally funded (Section 8) rental units in all Saratoga County and are at a level of 164 families being subsidized monthly.
A transitional shelter for veterans was established in Saratoga Springs in 1988. From inception of the homeless shelter we have been at full capacity and now operate a ten bed shelter located at 36 Church Avenue, Ballston Spa, New York.
The New York State Department of Social Service’s Homeless Housing and Assistance Program provided construction funding for an eight apartment complex in the Town of Wilton. Occupancy began in January 1991 and houses veterans and their families. This program targets veterans who are homeless about to be homeless or living in substandard shelters. The program named Curr-Ahee (an American Indian slogan meaning “Stand Alone ” that has been used by the 101st airborne since World War II) is the first of its kind in the country. We constructed four additional units in 1997.
