There are currently eight Veterans living in this facility. The reasons that brought us here are as diverse as the people in the military itself. A large percentage of the veterans here are college graduates, with the others here that held various professional positions before events occurred that brought them to this house. Some of the Veterans here suffer from alcohol and/or drug addiction, some of us were injured and some us just had a series of life events happen in just the wrong sequence that turned our lives inside out. For most of us it was not just one thing, it was a combination of events that brought us here.

Life here at the vet house requires effort by everyone that lives here. The first requirement of the house is that a veteran must be clean and sober for a minimum of 30 days before they will be invited to stay at the house. There is a strict zero tolerance policy regarding drinking and or drug abuse. The house is kept very clean, and this is accomplished by the residents individually and as a group. In addition to keeping their own area clean, chores are assigned to each resident, and all residents clean those areas not covered by the chores list in a team effort. Every resident is required to prepare an evening meal that is complete and nutritious. Attendance at the evening meal is mandatory. This meal is a time for all of us to talk about our day and socialize in a family style setting. After the evening meal everyone helps with the cleanup.

It seems that the one thing we all share; besides being veterans, is we all seem to have had difficulty asking for help. Asking for help for life's problems can be difficult for a veteran. Being in close contact with other veterans has the benefit of sharing information regarding services that can help us with the problems that we have. Most of us utilize the Stratton VA Hospital for medical issues. Everyday brings progress with the help of the staff and the other veterans around us.
